Most loricariinae species have filamentous extensions at the spines of the fins, especially at the upper spine of the caudal fin. The length of the filaments of several species is very impressive and can exceed the standard length of the individual specimen.
There are some speculations:
confusion of predators
sensitive organ for exploring the surrounding area
sexual display function
But there is no assured explanation for the existence of these filamentous extensions.
We would like to collaborate with biologists/ichthyologists for the research of the potential function.
